Both degrees are totally equivalent.

DOs have not been around as long as MDs, so the MD is more recognizable.

It should be noted that there are other medical degrees around the world as well, such as the MBBS, BMBS, MBChB MBBCh, BMed, MDCM, Dr. MuD, Dr. Med, and Cand.med.

The author above, , is correct. As you can see above their are many titles for worldwide doctors:

MBBS, BMBS, MBChB MBBCh, BMed, MDCM, Dr. MuD, Dr. Med, and Cand.med.

However, Jstjohn27, when 1 of those doctors above pass all the USMLEs and then do residency in US they take on the title MD. Why? Because everyone knows an MD is a Medical Doctor. These worldwide doctors would not want anything other then MD, certainly not DO. Why? Because most people in US and worldwide, even today, do not know what a DO is. You just don't see House, D.O. on TV, you see House M.D. Thus, it's time for the DO to change it's name to MD,DO or to MD.
