Good feelings are primary controlled by the mesolimbic (reward) circuit in the brain. Dopamine is released from these nerves, sending a signal forward into the prefrontal cortex, where the pleasure signal enters consciousness. An excess of dopamine release in the mesolimbic circuit creates feelings of euphoria. A deficiency of activation of this circuit leads to depression. Other neurotransmitters are also responsible for triggering this system, such as serotonin, acetylcholine, etc.. All work together to maintain a state of homeostatic control over emotion and attention systems to make the brain function properly.
