The Church kept urging people that if they prayed, then the plague would cease. Different hypotheses arose from the reigning pope, but it was always that the Christian god was displeased by something: the actions of the populace, the actions of those who are dying, the corruption of something/someone.

Although all the Christians were praying and living like the papacy instructed them to, the epidemic relentlessly surged forward, and more and more people died.

Christians began to lose faith in the Church because the clergy was making promises that were not being fulfilled.
