HIV crossed the species barrier twice, through the preparation and consumption of bushmeat- which is monkey. With the first cross, it was from a virus that infects chimpanzees and gorillas- SIV. This resulted in HIV1. The second time was from sooty magbees, the same virus (SIV) but a different strain- resulting in HIV2.

Our best guess is that the simian immunodeficiency virus was able to jump to the human race and become the human immunodeficiency virus as a result of people in Africa who hunt monkeys as a source of meat. When the monkeys are being butchered, the butcher (who is usually the hunter's wife) will get monkey blood on her, and if she has any cuts on her skin, the monkey blood can enter her body and give her an infection. If she is a bit sloppy with her knife, she cuts herself and becomes vulnerable to infection.

The old story of the first person getting HIV from having sex with a chimp is a myth. Chimps have had a primate component of the virus for tens of thousands of years known as SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus). The virus was most likely passed to humans when an infected chimpanzee was eaten for "bush meat."
