How did they try to escape the plague?

They moved away from the towns to the countryside, which sometimes removed them from the plague germs. Most of the time they did not escape it but took the plague germs with them and spread it further.

They did not understand its cause and their attempted cures were based on superstition.

People who were rich enough would store up food and lock themselves up in their houses. Others would surround themselves with strongly perfumed herbs such as rosemary because they believed that the plague traveled through 'bad air' and smells.

Some people even whipped themselves in order to show their love of god. They thought that by doing so, god would help and they could survive the plague.

Kill rats and fleas, and they moved to the countryside on there own with out there family and cook there own food and not to eat fat meat or fish.
