It is different for everyone, so this might not be the same for you. Some people have to get expanders and other equipment before they get braces.

This is what happened for me, but it is very unlikely that your procedures will be exactly the same. All orthodontists are different. This is the basic and typical way to get braces, though.

They start by putting spacers on your teeth to widen the space between the molars and make it easier to put the "ring" on your molars. You usually have these for 2 weeks before you get your actual braces. After the 2 weeks is up, you go back to the orthodontist and get the spacers removed. Your orthodontist will then insert the "rings" onto your back molars. You will get two for top braces and two for the bottom braces. If you are getting full-mouth braces, you will have four total. The "ring" acts as an end point for the wire and sits on your back molars. The orthodontist then precedes to glue the brackets to your teeth. After the glue dries, he/she will insert the wire. Small bands are put on the brackets to hold the wire in place. You might be able to choose the color(s) of the bands depending on the type of braces you are getting. The extra wire is cut off and you are finished!

What do dentists do when you get braces and you still have baby teeth?

Braces on baby teeth can be used to make room for incoming teeth if there isn't enough room naturally. Sometimes a kid will not have certain baby teeth or will lose them earlier than normal and the space will close, and braces or extractions may be necessary to make room for the permanent teeth

Can you get a chipped tooth fixed while wearing braces?

No. To have cap put on a chipped tooth requires the whole frontal surface to be free in order for the procedure to work. They would have to remove your braces and then put them back on after fixing the problem. Dentists also don't prefer removing brackets from capped teeth when you get your braces off as it can damage the cap. The best idea is to wait until you get your braces off and then have the tooth or teeth fixed.

Do they break a teeth to put braces?

No, orthodontists do not break teeth to apply braces to your teeth. However, if the orthodontist has determined that your mouth is overcrowded, it may be necessary to have some teeth extracted if they will interfere with the plan of correction. Once the braces are put on and the teeth begin to shift, they will gradually fill in the spaces where the other teeth were.
