It is unknown what causes Arthritis in juveniles such as Rheumatoid or Idiopathic Arthritis. You would not find osteoarthritis in children though. Osteoarthritis is common in older adults-Probably what your grandmother had, ha!- and is simply a wearing down with age as opposed to something such as RA. (The Idiopathic literally means unknown cause). RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) is an autoimmune disease, which means the body's immune system attacks itself. It is thought to be a virus, environmental factor or possibly genetics.

So short answer, Doctors do not know how younger people have arthritis.
