Teeth Are Not Normally Pure White

While generally described as "white" when not stained, teeth come in many shades from white to yellow to gray. Your normal tooth color is a result of heredity and diet. Removing stains professionally is one way to whiten teeth, and there are now over-the-counter whitening treatments that are generally safe. These treatments use oxygen to remove external stains and cannot permanently alter enamel color.

Avoid Staining

A lot of people do face problems with yellow teeth. The reasons for yellow teeth can be not enough calcium, or stains from smoking, coffee, or other foods. Some people face problems like yellow to faint yellow teeth because of too much brushing. While baking soda or peroxide can make your teeth white, such pure form substances can damage the tooth enamel if used too often. Various forms of trays and systems offer varying degrees of success in removing stains and discolorations from teeth. Unfortunately the most effective are also the most likely to damage tooth enamel.

See Your Dentist

Unless you really NEED whiter teeth, you should avoid damaging them with whitening products. Your dentist can provide the best information about safely whitening your teeth.
