A simple answer is "DON'T".

If you want to do an exercise that may help relieve tensed muscles in your back, and maybe when you do that your back will naturally "crack" all by itself, try this: Lean back against a wall so that your entire back is against it and your feet are about shoulder width apart and a foot, or so, away from the wall. Now use your leg muscles to push the small of your back gently against the wall. You may even turn your upper body to the left or right to find the right spot and the right angle. It should be done very slowly and under control. It should feel like a mild stretch. When you find the right spot, press gently into it with your legs pushing that part of your back into the wall, and then the most important part: breathe.

Sometimes when I do this there is a little "pop" that people refer to as cracking. Actually nothing is really cracking, and most definitely it's not your bones. It's really tiny air pockets that fill with gas temporarily and make a popping sound when they form. It's all natural as long as it is done slowly and a part of relaxation. I put both of my hands behind my back on my rib cage and push arching my back. Also you can put your hand on one side of your rib cage on the back and push doing this on both sides.
