If you are referring to Dissociative Identity Disorder [which is different than natural multiplicity*, which you cannot 'create'] there are a few theories as to how it is caused:

1) Traumatic experience, especially in childhood. This is likely due to the heavy link between trauma and Depersonalization Disorder [loss of self, disconnection from self, etc], and that Depersonalization Disorder often leads to DID.

Many Science Fiction novels have sprung from this theory:

The sci-fi book "Aristoi" paints a portrait of a man who whipped himself while dancing around a fire to force himself to gain further identities, while others in his civilization gained them naturally or in this manner.

In "This Alien Shore"

2) Go to a quack therapist, get diagnosed with DID and 6 or 7 other co-morbid disorders.

3) Socially Induced Multiplicity. This may occur, usually not on purpose, when someone is exposed in the media to cases of DID, or hangs around friends who are multiples. Either wanting the attention, or wanting to fit in, the person decides "I have a multiple too" or "I'm a multiple too" (Or otherwise showing they are misunderstanding the concept), and can at-will adopt a role-play like character. Other evidences that this is neither natural multiplicty or DID: They never switch 'into character' when by themselves, the adopted character 'suddenly disappears' when no longer needed/wanted. The person who playacts this way usually believes sincerely that they are a multiple, but their actions are much like 'acting' for a play. If you wish to 'create' this, watch a lot of shows that give erroneous presentations of multiplicity [Like Sybil, Three Faces of Eve, various tv show episodes], or quiz some multiple friends. Then, make up your own alter-ego and start talking as him/her. [Note: this is not actually recommended].

[Natural Multiplicity*, as mentioned above, cannot be created or forced. Natural multiplicity is when many people share one body. It varies from DID in many ways, most notably in that natural multiples do not experience dissociation (loss of self) and most experience no loss of memory, both of which are required criteria for DID].
