A gumboil is also called a dental abscess. It is a growing pocket of infected pus, and the very best way to deal with it is by a course of prescribed antibiotics.
While you are waiting for an appointment with your doctor or dentist, you can hold hot salty water in your mouth and swoosh it around the gumboil area. The salty water should be as hot as you can bear it without burning yourself. This treatment opens up the blood vessels so they can carry away some of the infected pus so it reduces pain caused by the build up of pressure. You can also use some over-the-counter pain medication while you are waiting to see your doctor or dentist, but frankly, they aren't strong enough to have much effect at reducing the pain.
