Usually, the simplest way to get rid of a toothache is to have the offending tooth removed.

If you wish to save the tooth, it will probably require a root canal and a filling or crown.

Sometimes, a toothache is caused by something other than the tooth.

A sinus infection can sometimes cause an upper tooth to ache. Get rid of the sinus infection, usually with antibiotics, and the 'toothache' will be gone.

A much rarer condition is something called 'trigeminal neuralgia'. This is an extremely debilitating condition that manifests itself as a toothache when in fact it is a disorder of the nerve that feeds the teeth. It is treated with medication or surgery.

For a simple temporary remedy you can use oil of cloves. Place a few drops on a cotton ball and place on the offending tooth, you can also rub the oil on the gums and tooth. You can also rub 1 or 2 drops of Chinese Herbal Oil on the affected area. Or you can use 2 or 3 drops of lobelia. These are all available at health food stores.
