Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure.

A few drinks a week appear to reduce a woman's chance of developing hypertension. Researchers studied alcohol consumption and subsequent high blood pressure for eight years among over 7,000 women, aged 20 to 40, in the Nurses' Health Study. They found that light to moderate drinking reduced the risk of getting hypertension.

It has also been found that men and women who suffer hypertension may reduce their risk of suffering cardiac death if they drink alcohol.
