How do you get rid of a dog's cold?

If a dog seems to have a cold, you usually don't need to do anything. The dog's immune system will normally get rid of the cold within a few days. Provide supportive care, making sure your dog stays warm enough, has enough to drink, and does not get overly stressed.

There is no cure for a cold in dogs. Dogs are susceptible to a variety of rhinoviruses and influenza viruses, both of which can cause upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes and coughing. As these are typically viral infections, there are no medications or herbal supplements or anything else that can actually eliminate the virus from the dog. The good news is, in the vast majority of cases the viral infection is self-limiting and your dog will clear the infection on his/her own.

In the meantime, you should provide a warm place to sleep, adequate water and food and let your dog deal with the infection on his own. He may be less energetic for a couple of days, but this is expected and a normal consequence of clearing the virus. If your dog starts vomiting, has diarrhea, won't eat or drink or doesn't get significantly better within 5 days, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian.
