First, recognize that there are most definitely elements about the object of obsession that are clouding your judgment regarding the reality surrounding that object, whether your focus is a person, substance, etc. Second, focus on different areas of life - new hobbies, new people - so that the obsession can take a backseat in your mind. When you do find your thoughts wandering back to the obsession, remember the realities you recgnized. Keep a list and refer back to it. Don't let yourself fall back into a pattern of fantasizing over the object of obsession. Keeping busy and letting go of memories of the obessession can work but remember that it will definitely time, self-awareness and patience - a lot of it.
