The best type of massage for the lower back (and every other part of your body for that matter) is a Shiatsu massage. The technique isn't that hard to learn, but it takes someone with strong fingers and hands that can massage the tissue deep enough to get effective relief.

I've added link to one of the many YouTube vids on Shiatsu. If you can find a local practitioner, that's a better option, as there's only so much you can get from a video. It's better if you've go someone qualified to either do it for you, or train you how to do it.
