This is something one gets better at with practice and trail-and-error, really. A few tips are to keep the tobacco tamped down correctly, so that means not so tight that you can't take a good, effortless drag, and not so loose that the embers exhaust themselves. The moisture content in the tobacco is also a big factor. if it's too wet, it will constantly go out. if it's too dry, it will burn very easily and stay lit, but it will probably burn your tongue.
