A tear in the gum will often heal by itself, although sometimes there is scarring. Around the teeth, a dentist should be consulted if the tooth root is exposed, or if the gum does not knit back tightly enough. (This can cause a gingival pocket to form.) Gently massaging the gum can restore its flexibility in some injuries.

The surgical treatment is suturing (sewing) by a licensed periodontist.
