The triceps muscle reflex can be performed as follows:

1. The patient's upper arm is abducted (extended out to the side - away from the body)

2. The forearm is allowed to hang toward the floor.

3. The tendons which attach the triceps muscle to the elbow joint should be facing basically upward (toward the ceiling) at this point. These tendons can be identified by pressing near the elbow joint and feeling for the "rubbery" cord-like structures.

4. Place the finger firmly against one of these tendons, then strike the finger digit with the reflex hammer.

5. Watch for the hanging hand to move away from the body slightly. This is the reflex.

What is the role of the reciprocal innervation in the biceps and triceps reflexes?

Reciprocal innervation plays a crucial role in the biceps and triceps reflexes by ensuring coordinated muscle response during movement. When the biceps muscle contracts (e.g., during the biceps reflex), the reciprocal innervation mechanism simultaneously inhibits the triceps muscle, preventing it from contracting. This allows for smooth and efficient movement, ensuring that opposing muscles do not work against each other. This mechanism is essential for maintaining balance and coordination during reflex actions.
