'Insane' is a blanket term and doesn't really refer to any mental illnesses; it is not used now in the medical or psychiatric fields. It used to be used in Victorian times more than now. The law uses the term "criminally insane", but that is a different discussion.

No one can provide a diagnosis but a professional. Consult a mental health care provider if you are concerned about your behavior or emotions.

Here are some facts about this topic:

• On a continuim, we can all be or feel 'a little' sane to insane at any given time. But what movies depict as feeling insane is not true to life.
• Having very strong emotions does not mean someone is "insane".
• Having very strong emotions that feel scary to experience does not mean someone is "insane".
• Feeling out of control sometimes-- like crying uncontrollably, or having an angry outburst--does not mean someone is "insane".
• Lacking or losing concentration, or losing a train of thought, or feeling confused does not mean someone is "insane".
• Being forgetful, stressed, or having upsets or 'triggers' from PTSD does not mean someone is "insane".
• People misuse the word in everyday language, like telling a boyfriend, "You're insane!" We shouldn't label people with this kind of word. The same goes for calling someone "crazy". Both terms should be outlawed from the English language.
• There are many rational explanations for events and experiences, but too often, we get the impression from movies that these events, experiences, and emotions are signs of "insanity".
• Most people who are truly suffering a severe mental illness where they cannot tell reality from non-reality do not realize--at the time--that they act, think, or feel differently than what they should feel, act, or think. Other people with a mental illness do recognize their symptoms. Having a symptom or symptoms of a mental illness does NOT mean a person is insane.
• People with even severe mental illness do NOT 'go wild'', foam at the mouth, jerk around, etc. Epileptics were once considered "insane" but epilepsy and the physical symptoms do not mean someone is "insane".
• Since the Middle Ages, churches tried to explain 'having strong emotions' or acting differently by telling people they had demons or evil spirits. By the time of Freud in the early 1900s, instead of demons, people with problems were deemed "insane". Insane Asylums flourished in the 1800s-early 1900s. By 1980s, the US government closed State "psychiatric hospitals'. Today, we have more information than to claim someone with problems has "demons"--or to call them "insane".

If you suspect you are mentally ill, or are concerned about your behavior or emotions, please see a psychologist, psychiatrist, or even a general doctor as soon as possible. Do not label yourself as "insane" or allow anyone else to label you with that word.
