Pharyngitis and Tonsilitis can be caused by Allergies, viruses or bacteria such as streptococcus. (Strep throat) Allergic and viral sore throats usually resolve on their own within a few days. However, bacterial infections require a prescription for antibiotics such as penicillin, azithromyocin or quinolones depending on the kind of infection you may have. This usually requires an encounter with a physician. Over the counter remedies such as decongestants will provide symptomatic relief but will not cure the infection.
