When someone breaks their foot, their doctor may sometimes fit an air-cast boot. It acts as an alternative to a cast, that allows the area to breath.and means that the bone will heal faster.
Yes, well at least it has worked for me. I broke my foot 3 weeks ago and am still wearing an air cast. The first couple of times I drove with it on were a little iffy but I got the hang of it after the first day or two. Just be more alert on reaction time because it is easy to slam on the breaks with an air cast on while driving.

You may not find a tall-soled athletic shoe anywhere. The problem is, in order to create stability, a hard air cast has a thick base (sole). It's depth is likely 2x the height of a normal shoe. The difference is intended to remind you to stay off the injured leg / foot and rest it as directed by your physician.

Not if it is on your right foot. If its on your left foot and the car is an automatic (you only need one foot to drive it) then you can drive it legally. If the cast is on your right foot then you can get a ticket for driving that way. You have to wait until your doctor says you can take the cast off. Be patient, its not worth getting in an accident or getting a ticket and having your insurance rates go up. I am also presently fighting this problem and havent driven myself anywhere in over a month now.
