It usually goes through you fecal oral route.
E. coli can be spread just about any way you think of. It is actually quite a common bacteria and is part of the normal microbiota for many people. This means that a person can have it on their body without any signs of infection. It can be there indefinitely with no problems or it may cause an infection if they get a wound and it gets in that. So many people do have it on them, it is common to be spread to objects such as doorknobs, railings, and other places people commonly touch. If another person comes by and touches it, their body may have a reaction (where the other person did not). In addition, e.coli is a common cause of nosocomial infections - which are infections that people acquire while in hospitals or medical settings. Again, the normal microbiota of some, cause problems in areas of weakness (such as wounds or lower immune systems that would cause someone to be in the hospital).
