* Rickets is a disease of the bones, usually caused by lack of vitamin D, which can disturb the normal bone growth. It is commonly seen in infants and children. The bones are soft and deformities occur due to pressure from muscle action. Vitamin D can be obtained by exposure to sunlight (10 - 15 mins per week is usually enough) and is also present in dairy foods. This disease is entirely preventable. Interestingly, in Australia (considered the skin cancer capital of the world) there has been a rise in vitamin D deficiency because people are avoiding the sun.
