When in an area with or without ash trays or receptacles around or nearby, smokers will throw their cigarette butts onto the ground. From there they all make their way into our environment especially by way of storm drainage. In a light rain they end up filling up the gutter or edge of the roadways and sidewalks. In a heavy rain they get washed into the gutter, down through the storm drains and into waterways. There are billions of them in our ecosystems throughout the world.
