The intestines serve 2 main purposes. They absorb nutrients from what you eat. This function is vital and you cannot live without that. You would starve to death. The other purpose is to remove solid waste from the body. When you eat, not all of what you eat is good for you or can be used. So you defecate.
I guess its to help you digest
