How is diabetes treated?

For Diabetes type 2, lots of exercise, every day. Carbohydrate restriction. If that's not enough (or if you fail to make enough lifestyle changes,) oral medication or injected insulin is used.

It depends if it is Type I or Type II (that occurs with age). Type I is treated with Insulin, Type II is usually treated with diet and medication such as Glucophage, but may eventually need insulin as well.

Treating Diabetes

Type 2: If you have been diagnosed with diabetes your doctor would know you best and how it should be treated. In general, one must change their diet.

No refined sugar, limited fruits, limited starch and other restrictions. It is usually advised that you eat six small meals as opposed to three "traditional" meals a day. Not everyone has to take insulin. Some can control it with oral medication others with diet.

The only way to cure diabetes type II is to make permanent lifestyle changes that include maintaining a healthy weight, frequent physical activity, and a healthy carb-conscious diet.

Type 1: By taking insulin through either injection or pump therapy.

Type I must be treated with insulin.

Type II can be treated with medications at first, but lifestyle changes alone can cure it. Weight loss, calorie/carbohydrate restriction and vigorous physical activity have all been proven to reverse the symptoms of type II diabetes, when first diagnosed.

Keeping blood sugar within range is very important and becomes more so over the years. Over time, if blood sugar remains high, type-II diabetes tends to deteriorate, eventually requiring insulin and becoming less susceptible to cure via lifestyle change alone.
