The water deprivation test is a test which is performed to check the regulation of fluid balance and concentration power of your kidneys. Regulation of the fluid balance is a complex process which involves the Pituitary hormone called Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH), the response of kidneys to ADH, amount of fluid intake, various salt contents of your body, etc. The water deprivation test can only be performed on a person who has not taken any fluids. Because of this, the test can only be performed under medical supervision. This test is usually performed in children to see if he/she has Diabetes Insipidus. Diabetes Insipidus is caused either when the Pituitary gland does not release the ADH hormone or when your kidneys do not react to it to control urine production.

Which is a lab test done to help diagnose diabetes insipidus?

A key lab test used to help diagnose diabetes insipidus is the water deprivation test. This test assesses the body's ability to concentrate urine in response to dehydration.
