It depends. I know this is likely not what someone who is hoping to be pregnant after a miscarriage wants to hear but there isn't a definitive answer since it depends when the miscarriage happened (how far along was the woman?) and also how long it takes for the hCG (the pregnancy hormone detected by pregnancy tests) to leave her system.

If a woman is wondering if a positive test is indicating the hormones left by a miscarriage or is a sign of a new pregnancy, she should go to her doctor or midwife for a quantitative (not qualitative) blood test or an ultrasound. A quantitative blood test will measure how much hCG is in her system while a qualitative blood test will do the same thing a urine test does -- say whether or not there is any hormone there. An ultrasound will examen the contents of the uterus to see if there is an embryonic sac or missed particles from the miscarriage.

Will a pregnancy test show negative if you miscarried?

Pregnancy tests simply "look" for the presence of a hormone that is present when a pregnancy has occurred. After a miscarriage, a pregnancy test may remain positive for a while until all of that hormone has disappeared below the level the test needs to be positive. A blood (serum) pregnancy test (that you can obtain at a physician's office) can tell about how far along a pregnancy is, and this can be compared to how far along the person should be; the test results will drop in number over time if a miscarriage occurs until it reaches 0. How long it takes the hormone to leave the system is highly variable from several days to several weeks. Hope this helps! Dr. B.

You had bleeding for 1 day a negative pregnancy test but a fetal sac seen on a transvaginal scan have you lost your baby?

It could just be to early in your pregnancy to detect it on a test . I had 3 negative pregnancy tests even a blood test at the DR and I was indeed pregnant....about five weeks. And 8 months later delivered a healthy baby girl. However I did have a miscarriage about two months before I concieved her. I was bleeding for about to weeks straight and passing big blood clots. I went to the Dr and there was a gestational sac, but no embryo in it. they did a blood test and checked my HCG(pregnancy hormone) levels once a week and they got lower and lower, indicating the pregnancy was terminating. However dont panic just because you are bleeding it can be a normal sign of pregnancy as long as its not accompianed by cramping. I bled a little when I was pregnant with my second child and I carried him to term and he is happy and healthy!

Can you have symptoms of miscarriage but the home pregnancy said positive?

Having a previous miscarriage wouldn't change the outcome of a pregnancy test. ~pawsalmighty It may actually read a positive result if you miscarried early enough before. The length depends on how long you were pregnant. This is because your hormone levels are dropping but still exist; therefor a + reading will show up.
