How long after your period should you wait to try to get pregnant?

This is different for each person. Usually it is around day 14 on a regular 28 day cycle, and less if your cycle is short and more if it is longer. This is calculated using the first day of your period as day 1. You can often tell if you see clear and stretchy mucus around that time. Some women also have pain in one side of their lower abdomen when they are ovulating or just before. You can buy kits to test when you are ovulating - which is the time you can become pregnant.

It can take up to 72 hours for the egg to be fertilized by the sperm, and/or for a fertilized egg to become implanted into the uterine wall. After 72 hours and an egg is not fertilized by the sperm, the sperm will die off, and the egg will continue its ovulation as it waits for another sperm to be successful in fertilizing it, or will finish ovulation and you will have your period.
