You don't acutally menstruate. Its a discharge that starts out as a heavy bleeding and lessens and changes color as the next couple weeks go on. It will eventually go from red, to brownish, to brown, to light brown, to yellowish, to white and then stop. Unfortunately right around the time it stops, you will probably get your first "real" period post-birth
