As long as it takes!....And the less you use it, the sooner it will heal! I know that sounds trifle, but it depends on many things; age, lifestyle, health and diet. Speaking for myself-Male, 46 years of age- I like doing pushups. One morning I didn't properly warm up and pulled a ligament in the right shoulder. I had to surrender doing pushups for 2 weeks. In the mean time; no alcohol, caffeine, smoking or red meat, and avoid as much as possible using that arm during the duration. You should begin gentle stretching exercises with that arm after 3 days of noticing the pain-(only if the pain is slight!), if it's more than slight- see a doctor! A hot shower twice a day with the water focused on that area should be repeated during the healing process. Use an ice pack only if you know your not going to be using that arm-and especially before you go to bed- no more than 15 minutes. Give it at least 2 weeks! Go to the vitamin store and get 50 mg of Hyaluronic Acid,(a connective tissue component) and 250 mg of L-Glutathione,(Protectant for muscle and oxidative stress), and be vigilant with your diet-the more fruits and vegetables, the better! Berries are excellent for a pro-active defense against oxidant invaders-and fresh spinach is full of iron, which helps build the muscle. Then- (if your a weight lifter you need more time! Give it a month, but start isometrics, If your an exerciser aficionado like myself), begin with easy exercises again- BUT ONLY if the pain has subsided! If after 2 weeks the pain is still there-(before beginning the work out regime), you should see a doctor! You may have more than just a pulled muscle!

My German Shorthaired pointer also has a shoulder sprain, and it can take 2 - 4 weeks for it to heal. I recommend to help them rehabilitate it gentle massage on the sprain, frozen peas to chill it, and gentle movement. Do this after the first week. But do scheduale a check up if possible to make sure there is no serious damage. Hope this helps.
