It can take hours, days, or weeks to pass a kidney stone. Pretty much the smaller the stone the faster it will pass. The larger the stone, the greater the risk that it will remain trapped in the ureter, significantly obstructing the flow of urine and eventually causing damage to the kidney or infectionill flush out of your body.

The above answer is pretty standard, but not always accurate. It can take months...yes, MONTHS to pass a stone of any size. It all depends on the shape of the stone, your physiology, and how well you keep your body hydrated. I currently have a small 3mm stone that has been stuck in my ureter for 4 months now. It's very painful, but the doctors insist on letting it pass on its own. I've had other stones that were slightly bigger than only took hours to pass. So, while it would seem that the medical community more or less agrees with the previous answer, it is not always the case for everyone.
