The growth of osteophytes depends on several factors... 1. The location in the spine 2. The profession of the individual 3. Genetics 4. Weight 5. The age of the person in question Since osteophtes are bony spicules (little spike-shaped bones) forming along the ridge of the body of vertebras, and represent Arthritis, or wear & tear of the bone... In a person who performs hard labor, I would expect osteophytes to be visible on XRays when in their mid 30's - 40's. In a person who sits at a desk all day, I would expect that to occur in the 40's - 50's... It's really hard to give one answer that covers all people, but experience suggests the folks that perform strenuous work develop them earlier in life. Hope this helps...!
