How long does it take to recover from gallbladder surgery?

Usually doc's say after a week, unless you do heavy lifting or laboring at your job. MY EXPERIENCE... I returned to work at a manual labor job after only 2 weeks. (They say you may return to desk jobs and jobs that aren't as strenuous at about 2 weeks.) As a result of my going back too soon, I am still having problems. I have a pain near one of the incisions (laproscopic) that is gradually getting better, but still giving me problems. One doctor says it is a nerve and another says it is a muscle problem. I had my surgery in October 2007 and it is now mid-September 2008. Be careful!!!

Depends on your line of work. Manual labor, physical moving and lifting of heavy objects, driving, etc., need longer time off work due to the nature of the surgery affecting the abdominal muscles. Administrative, sales, consultations, etc. don't involve alot of physical activity can return to work sooner. Basically, you can return to work within a week for laparoscopic surgery, 2-3 weeks if they did an open surgery.

If you have the laparoscopy procedure, which mean they make a small incision in your belly button and three small incision on your left side of your belly and insert a camera and other devices, it will be possibly 12 to 24 hours in the hospital and 1 - 2 weeks off work depending on what you do.

If they have to cut you open, which will be a 5-8inch incision in you abdomen, the hospital stay could be 3-7 days and at least 6 weeks recovery.

But in both case, doctors will advice you to avoid heavy lifting for at least 3-6 month to avoid a hernia.

Well I had mine removed in early April of this year and I'm still suffering. I was told that I may have complications up to 12 months after. So I would say a year then you might be back to normal. The initial pain and discomfort I took off a week but ended up needing another week. I felt pretty good after 2 weeks, a little sore but better.

it depends on if they do microscopic surgery or if they have to cut you open firther than that a couple weeks for micro and about a month and a half if they cut you wide open
