Bone Marrow transplants has greatly improved in the last couple decades. The rate of survival has also increased. Long ago if someone has cancer, they were dosed with radiation, but there were was the potentail relapse of their cancer or their infection and died.

Generally, patients with more urgent medical needs may receive transplants more quickly. Additionally, wait times can differ by region and transplant center. On average, many patients wait several months to years for a suitable liver donor.
Part of the reason for being placed on a "transplant list" is to wait until a matching donor is found. At that point, the donor is an unknown, only a possibility. However, if you can find a willing person and if the test results match compatibility with your tissues and blood type, then the "waiting list" is not needed. Your next obstacle would be to have insurance willing to pay. With all of those factors met, you'd have the transplant.
