There are 206 bones in the human skeleton. There are 80 bones in the axial skeleton, which is mainly comprised of the vertebral column (the spine), the skull, and the rib cage. There are 126 bones in the appendicular skeleton, which includes all movable limbs and supporting structures (girdles). These 206 bones are classified into 5 types:

1. Long bones- found in the arms and legs. Ex. the femur

2. Short bones- most common in wrists, such as the carpal bone, and ankles

3. Flat bones- flat, thin, and often protect vital organs Ex. parietal bone

4. Irregular bones- odd looking bones Ex. sphenoid bone

5. Sesamoid bones- unusual bones that are small, flat and wrapped within tendons that move over bony surfaces Ex. the patella
