normal rate of breaths per minute is 12-20, but this varies due to the health & size of someones lungs. children breathe at a faster rate than adults.

you can practice slowing down your breathing rate by taking deeper breaths and exhaling thru pursed lips. excellent book called oxy-cize teaches the same technique as many types of yoga practice. breathe in thru your nose for 4 seconds as you expand your belly, hold for 4 seconds then exhale for 7 seconds thru your mouth while pulling your navel toward your spine and your pelvic floor up. do this in series of 4 breaths ONLY and of course, discontinue this practice if you feel lightheaded or dizzy.
