The due date is really just an expectation based on statistics. If you plotted number of days from start of last mentruation to birth on a graph, you would get something like a bell curve that peaks at 280 days. That means that more women give birth at 280 days than on any other single day, that almost as many give birth at 279 and 281 days, and the number drops off as you go farther above and below 280.

The question "Will I (or any particular woman) give birth on day 280?" is impossible to answer particularly for a first pregnancy. Subsequent pregnancies might follow the pattern of the first, but there are no guarantees. There have been fully developed babies born on day 250, there have been babies born at day 310 who were normally developed and would not have been ready before that.
