It certainly happens. One might be advised it has been used as a plot device- both past tense and recent past, in a number of Country and Western songs- always handled with restraint. One example that is fairly obvious is the Elvis opus- Don"t cry Daddy- what gives it away it is a childbirth death and not a divorce or family quarrel are the lines- You still got me and little Tommy ( evidentally the baby) together we"ll find a brand new mommy.. and so it goes. People don"t do songs about non-existent tragedies. think it over. it can happen.
