Textbook answer is 20 primary (baby) teeth and 32 permanent (adult) teeth.

However, it is not uncommon to see people who have a couple of extra teeth (supernumerary teeth) or to be congenitally missing a couple of teeth.

For example, I only developed one third molar (wisdom tooth), my wife doesn't have any -- (they were not extracted, just never there), my oldest son has all four wisdom teeth present, and my second son is congenitally missing his mandibular second premolars.
