I think it's just luck of the draw, not a set amount, everyone's different. Some people smoke their entire life and not a problem some smoke a pack and get cancer, the best thing is to avoid them all together.

What are the signs and symptoms of an ulcer and how can I prevent and treat them?

There are two common types of ulcers: Stomach ulcers and pressure ulcers (bed sores). Stomach ulcers usually consist of stomach pain that gets worse after eating. These can be commonly treated with over the counter antacids. Pressure ulcers are most commonly found in people who spend multiple days in bed at a time. They are caused from putting pressure on bony areas for prolonged periods. These can be prevented by moving patients in a bed so that they do not put too much pressure on one area of their body for too long.

How do duodenal ulcers form?

Ulcers are a tear in the lining of the tissues. Usually occurring in the stomach and small intestine, though they can occur in other tissues of the body. The most common cause of stomach ulcers is a bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori. It can be cured with anti-biotics and can be transmitted by eating foods that are contaminated with this bacteria. The bacteria weakens the lining of the stomach which is then further irritated by acids which occur naturally in the stomach causing the ulcer and the pain and burning associated with the ulcer.

What is the use of peptic?

Peptic ulcers occur in the stomach - gastric ulcers - and the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) - duodenal ulcers. They result from an imbalance between the amount of acid in your stomach and its protective lining. In the past it was believed that ulcers were caused by stress, poor eating habits, too much rich, fatty food or spicy food, alcohol or caffeine. However, it is now known that most peptic ulcers are caused by the Helicobacter pylori bacterium (also known asH. pylori). This is particularly true of duodenal ulcers. The cause of most other peptic ulcers is the regular use of medicines such as aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which are often used to treat the symptoms of arthritis.
