This is very individual. Each case must be evaluated seperatly. The surgeon combines information from clinical investigation, lab results and imaging before deciding what to do. A generally accepted method is the Alvarado score, where a score of 9+/10 means surgery, 7-8 means you can (but don't have to) wait, less than 6 means it isn't an appendicitis. Once the diagnosis of appendicitis is confirmed, patients are usually operated as soon as it can be arranged (when the OR is free). An appendicitis is not an extremely urgent matter though, so if needed, it can wait up to 24 hours (though the waiting time may not be comfortable for the patient).

If a patient is admitted from outpatient surgery for a complication the reason for the surgery is the principal diagnosis. True or False?

True. In cases where a patient is admitted for a complication arising from an outpatient surgery, the reason for the initial surgery is considered the principal diagnosis. This is because the admission is related to the outcomes of that procedure, rather than a new condition. Proper coding and documentation should reflect this relationship.

What medication should never be given to a person who may have appendicitis?

A person who may have appendicitis should never be given opioids, such as morphine or codeine, as they can mask the symptoms and make diagnosis more difficult. Additionally, medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be avoided, as they may also obscure symptoms and potentially lead to complications. It's essential to seek medical evaluation promptly rather than self-medicating.
