Very. During the research for the book The Ambiguity Advantage I found that denial occurs as a reaction to fear and can lead people to not see, hear and feel sensory data at all and to construct new perceptive realities for themselves.

'Total denial' usually occurs when an individual perceives a direct threat and can frequently not be a conscious activity. In other words people in denial can 'make up' at a psychological level, what is happening in a way that is completely rational and plausible for them and can't even understand other people disagreeing with their reality.
