By sympathetic, listen, and don't comment. Ask the occasional leading question. Let the patient talk. If they don't want to talk, remain silent. It takes a long time to earn a patient's trust, and it may take a dozen sessions before they begin to open up. If it was easy for them, they wouldn't need counselors.
