As microbiology and science had not been conceived to the extent of modern medicine, the only effective method of dealing with the plague was to quarantine the infected, the infected household, or the entire infected village or town. Movement between areas was prohibited. This was effective as the disease killed off the infected and as there was no contact between people, contagion of the disease ceased.

In London, infected households were boarded up with the sufferers still inside their homes waiting to die, being nursed by relatives or friends. A red cross was painted on the door as warning of the infected household. Those who helped their loved ones frequently succumbed to the disease and died also. That is how a household became infection free.
