In 1976 at Fort Dix, New Jersey, four soldiers who were previously healthy contracted the virus and developed pneumonia diagnosed by X-ray and had other symptoms of the flu. One died as a result. The virus circulated for about a month in the close quarters of basic training but not outside the group, then it disappeared. It is not always known why the influenza dies out, but it can be for different reasons such as: environmental conditions, it can be because most of those in the affected area have been exposed to something very similar in the past and can develop antibodies quickly, the virus itself may have mutated to a form that is no longer able to infect humans, or it might just remain a mystery why it disappeared.
