When you are depressed, it can feel like there is no way out of your depression, but it is possible to find a way through with a combination of medication, talk therapy, and some lifestyle changes.

First, talk to your doctor, who may recommend a course of antidepressant medication. While antidepressants treat the symptoms of depression, they won't cure it. Research has shown that combining antidepressant medication with some form of psychotherapy is more effective than either alone.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help you to identify the thoughts, feelings and behaviors which contribute to depression. It teaches you practical techniques to reframe negative thinking (which frequently accompanies depression) and the skills to cope better with life.

Sometimes writing things down helps you see things in a clearer light and can be a helpful emotional release. Writing in a journal may help help you spot your potential depression triggers and identify what helps/hinders you in coping with certain situations.

Learning how to manage stress in your life will also help you deal with depression. Yoga, tai chi, meditation and exercise all help with stress reduction.

Finally, while you may feel like shutting yourself away from the world, social isolation will only make depresssion worse. If you have a trusted family member or friend, ask them for their support to help you recover. Recovery from depression takes time. Be gentle with yourself and give yourself credit for the progress you are making each day.
