Clinical depression of Depressive Disorder is a medical illness, which has hopelessness as one of its features. Just being hopeless could be because (of series) of frustrating life experiences. This is different from Clinical depression.

In my preteen years, I had major depression. It wasn't the usual depression, it was the "I'm going to kill myself soon" depression. I had absolutely no help in bringing myself back up, and my parents (sadly) never known about it. It's because we, as humans, have a tendency to be insensitive towards each other.
