Eventually it would catch up to them. They would probably exhibit symptoms like- fatigue, restlessness, loss of concentration..ect. All of which could probably be diminished with adequate amounts of sleep.

It depends on what you mean by "too much" sleep. If a person is sleeping more than 10-12 hours a day, then it could be an indication of illness or depression. Quite often, when a person is depressed, they will sleep upwards of 16 hours a day. If you, or someone you know is sleeping that much, you/they need to see a doctor who can diagnose and treat the cause of sleeping so much.

Opinion only: Different people have different sleeping requirements. If six hours of sleep is close to your normal or average sleeping habit and you feel fine, I see no harm in going to the gym on this one occasion. If during your exercises, you feel weak or tired; simply return home and sleep or try to relax.
